Defensive driving tips anyone can use

Driving in an aggressive manner may increase your risk of being in a car accident. However, there are several steps that you can take to minimize your chances of being in a crash while traveling on an Illinois road or highway.

Maintain an adequate following distance

One of the easiest ways to avoid an accident is to maintain an adequate following distance. Doing so allows you more time to stop, slow down or take other evasive actions before you collide with another vehicle. Refraining from tailgating other drivers may also help to calm their nerves, which may enable them to drive in a safer and friendlier manner.

Make sure that your car is in good condition

Failing to maintain your vehicle may put you at a higher risk of getting into an auto accident. If your car has poor brakes, it may unnecessarily increase its braking distance, and this can be especially problematic while driving on wet or icy roads. Furthermore, tires that are damaged or improperly inflated can also impact your ability to stop or slow down in a timely manner. It may also be a good idea to make sure that the headlights, horn and other components are in working order prior to leaving for work, school or other destinations each day.

Driving in a defensive manner may reduce your risk of getting into a car accident. It may also reduce your chances of being held liable for any accident that you may ultimately be involved in. If your car is struck by another vehicle that is operated by a negligent motorist, you may be entitled to compensation. This may help to make up for any financial losses that you incur because of the defendant’s irresponsible actions.
